Monday June 8

June 8, 2019

Happy final week! Your cadets will be returning home very soon. This week everyday has a 1000 start time which is very enjoyable for the students, since they will be able to sleep in a little longer. However, the students must meet every morning at 0920 to make the bus. Once July 1st came, the buses shifted into a summer schedule where the buses came about every half hour, instead of every fifteen minutes, meaning students have to be out earlier so they do not miss the bus. (Wohoo for time management skills!)

Today Milad Armin, a lecturer from Liverpool John Moores University presented to the group "From Planktons to Heavy Residual Fuel Oil". Armin started off by teaching the carbon cycle in the oceans. The students learned about sedimentary basins, the complex mixture of crude oil, the refinery process, HFO contamination, and fuel testing.

The group got an extended lunch today (50 minutes) which was a nice break for the students to enjoy their food in the beautiful weather. Here in Norway it is 70 degrees and sunny. We are letting everyone at home enjoy the heat wave, that way when we return the pools and ocean will be nice and temperate for us.

After lunch Sean Loughney, from Liverpool John Moores University spoke to the group on Managing environmental risk in shipping companies. Loughney started off by defining hazards, risks, risk assessments, and risk management. He then discussed changes in approaches, hazard identifications, risk elimination and environmental impacts (oil pollution,  air pollution, water pollution, acoustic, and wildlife collisions). The group then looked at case studies of relevant incidents that have happened in the industry, and how the environment has been effected. After incidents, actions and implementations often take place (e.g: MARPOL requiring all newly built tankers having double hulls) which the students learned about. The group also learned about emission control areas, and the mandatory IMO 0.5% sulphur emission which will be implemented January 1, 2020.
