Wednesday July 3

July 3, 2019

Today the focus was on autonomous shipping. The first speaker, Paul Aamas, spoke on developing competence by building capacity conveyed through education and courses. Aamas explained that that the group will be visiting the test area this afternoon, which is an area defined for the testing of automated vehicles. The area virtually tests algorithms and control systems. He also explained that the solution to autonomy is to develop tools and infrastructure for development. Also, the industry must develop complete innovation systems to help start-ups in the industry.
The next speaker, Christian Hovden, who has an extensive background in the maritime industry, teaches electrical power, automation and robotic study progress at USN. Hovden presented on the shore control center and spoke about IMO regulations, and the importance for agreement and cooperation in the industry.
Finally, before the break, Marius Tanny continued to speak on Maritime autonomy and technology. The students grasped a better understanding on the up and coming technology and the way the industry will be changing over the next decade and years to come. Many seafaring jobs will be replaced by technology, however the need for shore side maritime business employees will always be in demand.

The students are preparing for the 4th of July party which they are hosting tomorrow for the International students, bringing a taste of home and traditions to Norway. Hopefully the cadets know how to BBQ the burgers, chicken, hot dogs they got!
