July 5, 2019

Happy Friday! Today was a different change in pace for the students. At noon the students took a bus to Oslo to spend the day on a boat house. Birgit Liodden hosted the cadets, as she spoke to the group on her career path, and provided a fun filled day for the students.

Liodden works at a start up company called YoungShip, which is a professional non-profit organization for young people working within the global maritime industry. Together the  company is a voice for all young maritime professionals, who need to be heard. Liodden was awarded the WISTA (Women's International Shipping&Trading Association) Leadership award in 2012 for her efforts to promote and challenge the industry.  She explained how the industry is changing, technical IT skills are becoming more essential and the environmental green footprint will be the biggest problem in the industry that our generation face.

Liodden was very interactive with the group, she asked each student their motives for studying maritime, and where they think the industry needs to focus the most on to move to a better future.  Liodden also gave wise advice to the students which I believe was one of the most valuable parts of the day.  She explained that each student needs to find a gap in the industry, and work towards finding a solution. Never become complacent, and bored in your job. Work towards a goal, and everyday find a new way to exercise your mind. The group also learned that they need to be technically savvy. Right now, the older generation lacks these technical skills and the need for the skill set is essential. What we learn today we needed to learn yesterday. As a whole we need to be ahead of the industry to make a better future.

Liodden asked the students to tell her what they saw in the water.
The group did not see much in the water, and she explained
a year ago the same water was filled with lots of fish, shells,
starfish, etc. and as time moves forward the water is losing a
lot of ocean life.

After an hour and a half the group got time off to have watermelon, BBQ food, and to just relax on the water. Many students went kayaking in the Oslo fjord, boating, paddle boarding, and swimming. The group really enjoyed this learning environment and I bet they wish school was like this everyday, year round.

At the end of the day Liodden wrapped up what was discussed during the day about the maritime industry and her career path.  She finished the day speaking about "burning out". We live in a generation that is "go, go, go" always working and stressing deadlines, that we are not taking proper care of ourselves. With technology today we are always connected, working extreme hours, and many people are burning out faster than average. Life moves fast and if you do not take the time to look around every once in awhile, you will miss it. The group saw what it took to be a leader and showed us how hard work will pay off, and all of the opportunities in the field. The group had an amazing day, with beautiful weather and we were very grateful for such an amazing host! One more week and your cadet will be returning home. Have a great weekend!
